PS . . . 3D?
Even though I’m quite the Xbox guy, I do partake in Playstation from time to time, and what can I say, I do like me some video games. What is it that I like more than video games: 3G video games, 3D video, 3D EVERYTHING. With what seems like the 1980s rolling back around on us again (tech ideas, not the clothes) we are gearing up for the next generation of the coolest technology that society never fully embraced.
Who is it that is bringing us this revolution in retro-vision-technology? This time it’s Sony . . . good ‘ol Sony. PS3 is beating everyone to the punch with 3D gaming. Sure NVIDIA has their “NVIDIA Vision” but that requires buying the equivalent of another PS3 . . . and a monitor . . . and glasses. What has Sony done that will alleviate the whole, “buying a new system” stigma that comes with a release of new technology? Simple, with an update for the PS3, an update that is rumored to be coming to a living room near you this summer.
PS3, XBOX, and Wii have been continuously competing with each other in terms of being loss leaders, which in terms of sales are items that are sold for way below production cost in hopes that other products will be purchased from their company that are sold at or above the production cost in order to make money from their services. This firmware update that we will see from Sony will probably push them far above the other systems in terms of “loss leadership” by giving users another reason to buy more games. If we know anything about the other two systems though, they won’t give up without a fight and you can be sure to see such an update come from XBOX or possibly even the Wii (which I would love to see). The only problem that I can see from Sony releasing these updates so far before everyone else is the same thing as with the previous incarnation of PS2: being early gives everyone else a potential chance to take a lead and pull ahead. Only time will tell with this technology. One thing is for certain with Sony, they know how to innovate the video game market.
From the looks of it and from what I can gather, you won’t need anything except an internet connection and some stereoscopic glasses, along with compatible games. I hope all of you PS3 gamers are drooling right now, I frankly am just itching to get me some PS3 action this summer, thank God for Tax Season . . . Well the returns, not the whole tax thing. Look for me to try to convince my fiancee to get one, then look for me to review it.
