Mektek (finally) releases MekPak 3.1

mektek 150x150 Mektek (finally) releases MekPak 3.1Sometimes, you just feel the urge to blow something up. However, that type of behavior is frowned upon by decent society, so in this day and age the best options for these kinds of urges generally come in the form of a video game. Some guys flock to Battlefield, others to Mass Effect, while others may geek out to World Of Warcraft. However my guilty pleasure lies with Mechwarrior. There’s nothing quite like “jumping into” a 10 story tall battlemech for a little late night carnage and destruction to while away the idle hours. It’s been many months since I’ve played, and to be honest I’d almost forgotten about the game – but today I got the news that Mektek was releasing it’s next MekPak, and that a new MekPak 4 is on the way.

I know, what the hell is a MekPak? It’s an expansion patch from a small Canadian firm for the original Microsoft MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries online game. Mektek has pretty much, single-handedly kept the Mechwarrior franchise alive through it’s releases of free expansions over the years, replacing the defunct Microsoft servers with it’s own MekMatch service and essentially living on donations. I could list Mektek’s accolades for hours in reference to what they’ve done to keep the title alive, but in order to really see what they’ve accomplished on their pitiful budget, you should just go ahead and dig out your old Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries CD, or order one off of Ebay or Amazon, download the Mekpaks and find out for yourself.

For some other info on what’s been going on with these guys, you should head over to the official Mektek site for some in depth information, to include the new Mechwarrior game in development by Smith & Tinker.
